NS class 4300

Introduction - WD Austerity 2-8-0 NS Class 4300

According to my personal records I bought this ready-to-run model by Bachmann on a model train fair in 2009 for the modest price of €50. Some later I acquired a detailing set focussing on the improvement of the cab by Dido Railway Models which is currently sold out (2018).

This set contains

  • rear cab sheet with windows
  • sliding side windows
  • tender doors
  • tender fall plate

Once I started studying the prototype if found many more differences than the little kit provided for. This sparked a search for other details to "Dutchify" the UK outline model.

  • Elongated smoke stack
  • Ladder to the clack valve on the right hand side [2] 235
  • Dutch head lamps
  • Dutch top head lamp iron on the smokebox door
  • Three Dutch head lamp irons on the rear of the tender
  • Two rear end lamp irons on the smokebox and on the tender each, see [3], 152, 153
  • Removal of the bottom middle head lamp iron
  • European coupler hooks
  • Air hoses, one on each buffer beam close to the coupler hook (right if seen from front)
  • Buffer beam ladders
  • Remove pipe below handrail on left boiler side (?), see [1] 120, 136, 161
  • Tool chest and fireman's iron rack on the right side of the tender, see [3], 138
  • Pipe leading to one single air hose, see[3], 175
  • Change the number to NS 4444 *)

*) This is not strictly necessary, but I have a weak spot for quadruple numbers so I will grab the opportunity since this loco actually existed just like the 1111 (steamm locomotive and electric locomotive), 2222 (diesel locomotive and FLIRT trainset) and the 5555 (steam locomotive)
